MV Mermaid II Information and Layouts

Mermaid II cruising Thailand's beautiful Andaman Sea

The Mermaid II is a steel-hulled vessel built in Thailand in the year 2000. She is 115ft (35m) long with a beam of 12ft (7m). She has ten cabins taking a maximum of 20 guests onboard. Eight of the cabins are on the main deck (deluxe) and two of them are below decks (standard). They offer the same amenities, but the cabins below decks have no picture windows. If double beds are not a concern to you or to your group, then this vessel offers good value for money. If you insist on double beds, have a look at Mermaid I instead.

Her engines are powerful enabling her to make good speed no matter what the weather. She's a stable vessel and comfortable all of the time whether underway or at anchor. She has electricity 24/7 and all the cabins and common areas are air conditioned.

Her itinerary includes diving in the Similan and Surin Islands (Richelieu Rock) and is one of the few boats to dive at Hin Daeng to the south of Phuket. Thus, this itinerary allows you to do a four-day trip to the northwest or a two-day trip to the south, or combine the two for a total of six-days of diving at the best spots of Thailand. Her schedule is easy to remember: Every Monday she departs for a four-day trip to the Similans and northward returning every Friday evening. She then departs every Friday evening for a southern islands trip, returning Monday morning: A perfect weekend or week diving getaway.

She is also available for Mergui (Burma) by charter only. Please ask for more information.

Roomy and spacious

Her eight deluxe cabins are all air-conditioned and new for the 2005-2006 season is that every cabin will have it's own private bathroom and shower. The two standard cabins down below are only available now if you charter the whole boat (20 persons rather than 16 maximum).

All of the cabins have a larger bed below and a more narrow bed above in each cabin, and each have their own sink and vanity mirror. The bathrooms are not huge but now offer complete privacy with no shared doors.

She features a large, well appointed interior saloon on her upper deck and just outside, an outdoor dining area where dive briefings can be done in comfort and quiet. She also has another interior saloon on the main deck forward of the guest cabins. On the forward top deck she has a tanning area/ sun deck. On this boat, even with 20 persons plus crew, there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy yourself when you're not diving.

Professional crew

Mermaid 2 always has professional staff managing the vessel operations and the diving. The qualified Thai crew generally runs the vessel while the Western staff are in charge of the diving to ensure proper communications. She usually has one cruise director, and several dive staff both Thai and Western depending on how full the boat is. You can dive with a divemaster all of the time, or in buddy teams depending on your experience level.

More than just hot air

Mermaid II has an excellent air station, and all tanks are filled in the racks without removing your gear, so there is no moving around once your equipment is set up and you're settled in. She also carries Oxygen for blending Nitrox to whatever mixture you desire. Her well-trained gas blender ensures your safety. If you are not Nitrox certified, take a course on board. It's easy, and once you understand and appreciate the advantages of Nitrox, it's difficult to go back to only air. Computers are for rent on the boat as well for those of you who don't own one.

Well-designed and clean

Everything is well organized and clean, and her practical layout allows the guest to get from one part of the boat to the other very easily. Her 115ft length makes for plenty of room wherever you are. The crew’s quarters, galley, and storage area are located on the lower deck, away from the guest areas (except for the standard cabins), so your privacy is ensured. For more information on this excellent, safe boat, see the technical chart below.
